Tottenham 2-1 Arsenal

With the stakes high, both teams walked out into an usual eerie atmosphere especially for derby day, as they looked to hunt down a spot in the Europa League in the 200th meeting between the two and the first clash at Tottenham’s new stadium.

The home side started brightly as they were determined to press Arsenal high up the pitch to pressure the Gunners weary defence into a mistake, this was almost highlighted straight away as Lucas Moura robbed possession and stung the palms of Emilio Martinez with a long range effort. Once Arteta’s side had regained their composure they were able to find by hassling the Tottenham midfield deep into their own half which led to the breakthrough in the 17th minute, as Granit Xhaka brilliantly won the ball back from Serge Aurier and found Lacazette just outside the area in which the French striker had one look up, then hit a pile driver into the top corner past the outstretched Hugo Lloris. Just as Arsenal appeared to have a firm grip on the game, another calamitous error from defender Sead Kolasniac meant they were pegged back just minutes later, the Bosnians way-wood back pass was pounced on by the lively Heung-Min Son who had the composure to lift the ball over the onrushing Emilio Martinez to level the scores up. Going into the closing stages of the first half, there was only one notable effort which saw Ben Davis hit a fierce shot from about 30-yards out, forcing the Gunners shot-stopper into a fine save as he pushed it onto the crossbar.

Contrary to what we have seen in recent weeks, Arsenal started the second half quickly and with Jose’s side looking like their busy fixture list had finally caught up with them, the visitor must have felt they were there for the taking. After relentless possession and territory, Arsenal finally broke down Spurs as Lacazette slid Aubameyang in down the left hand side of the box only for the usually clinical striker cannon his shot of the crossbar and out, it was a golden opportunity for a player of his calibre. The one way traffic continued as the away side pushed for the elusive winner, this time Hector Bellerin’s deflected shot found Aubameyang on the edge of the box with his first time curling effort forcing Hugo Lloris into a smart save again. However, it was Tottenham who had the last laugh, as a rare venture forward led to a corner in the 81st minute and Toby Alderweireld rose the highest to find the top corner to secure the three points for Jose Mourinho’s side.
